The Nine Maidens: Stone and Story

Scattered across the wild landscapes of Britain, from the moors of Cornwall to the windswept hills of The North stand ancient sentinels known as the ‘Nine Maidens’. These enigmatic stone formations, often weathered and leaning, are said by local folklore to be women turned to stone for dancing on the Sabbath. But beneath these Christian cautionary tales lies something older, deeper, ancestral whispers echoing through the stones.

In Celtic and Arthurian traditions, groups of nine women appear time and again, powerful, mysterious figures who dwell on the threshold between worlds. The Nine Maidens of Annwn, priestesses of the Welsh Otherworld, stir cauldrons of rebirth and enchantment. The Nine Sisters of Avalon, veiled in mist, tend to the wounds of kings and weave the threads of fate. Always nine: the sacred triads multiplied, a number of magic and mystery.

Though no direct line ties these mythical women to the stones that bear their name, the resonance is unmistakable. The Nine Maidens become more than granite and folklore, they are symbols of ancient feminine power, standing at the edge of seen and unseen.
